Hong Kong’s first Bitcoin real-estate shop was opened last Friday. The shop is run by a Hong Kong virtual currency trading platform, ANX, and is based on currency exchange with Hong Kong currency.
Bitcoin transactions were significant in moving from virtual to physical, following the closure of Mt. Gox as a result of the technology gap, which has also been a pain to Bitcoin players.
According to Xinhua, the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange operator, Mt. Gox, announced on 28 February that the company had applied for bankruptcy protection in the Tokyo District Court of Japan because of the theft of 850,000 bitcoins from the trading platform. Mark Karpler, Chief Executive Officer of Mt. Gox, apologized at a press conference in Tokyo that day, saying that “bitcoin was lost because of a bug in the company’s system”.
For bitcoin buyers, the purchase of bitcoin first requires that the money be deposited into the online trading platform and then traded online, a model that is easily hacked. But when a real-estate shop is opened, bitcoin players can walk into the real-estate shop and buy bitcoin directly with cash, and then deposit the virtual currency in their own electronic wallet, and the entire transaction can be completed within a few minutes.
However, the HKSAR Government has begun to pay close attention to the use of Bitcoin in Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Financial Services Authority has qualified Bitcoin as a high-risk virtual electronic commodity, rather than a currency, and has been excluded from its regulatory scope. Therefore, it is not necessary to obtain a government license for business related to Bitcoin, a situation similar to that of a sales network game card.
Chen Jiaqiang, Director General of Finance and Finance of the Hong Kong Government, stated in January that the development of Bitcoin or other virtual currencies in Hong Kong is not yet a widely used payment medium or electronic currency and that regulators have been closely following the development of such virtual currencies, liaising with regulators around the world, including in the interior, to ensure that the use of Bitcoin does not adversely affect Hong Kong's financial stability.
Chen Jiaqiang appealed to the public to be more careful because of the highly speculative nature of Bitcoin and, when considering trading or investing in bitcoin, to take into account the price volatility of bitcoin and the lack of physical, issuer or physical economic base support in order to raise awareness of risk.
